Children’s Dentistry Kellyville

Did you know that most dental decay is preventable? We recommend routine scale and cleans as well as a professional fluoride treatment every six months. When these are combined with a good hygiene and diet plan, your child can lower their chances of unwanted cavities and dental emergencies in the future.

Your Child’s First Appointment

At Kellyville Smiles we recommend booking your child’s first dental visit by age 2. At this point in your child’s development, we can spend time familiarising them with the dental office environment so that they’re less likely to feel nervous in the future. Early visits usually consist of showing them our chair, the air/water syringe and explaining how to brush their teeth. Using a hands-on approach, we teach them proper brushing with simulated toy teeth and discuss how to form good habits from a young age. Depending on your child’s cooperation, we may even be able to have a look around in their mouth to “count” their teeth. We’ll discuss any specific concerns with you, the parent, and talk about specific habits and food choices that can affect your child’s risk of dental decay.

Second and Subsequent Visits

By this visit, we’ll start cleaning and applying fluoride to your child’s teeth. The experience resembles that of what you would have during an adult scale and exam. Intermittent X-rays are taken as needed to screen for cavities between teeth.

Like adults, intermittent recare appointments are scheduled twice per year. If your child is in braces, has special needs or tends to have poor oral hygiene (with significant buildup) we may recommend cleans on a more frequent basis.

Until your child can tie their shoes, we recommend following behind them to help ensure they brush and floss thoroughly each day. With enough practice, your child will develop the independence they need to maintain a healthy smile well into adulthood.

Orthodontic Evaluations

The American Association of Paediatric Dentistry recommends an orthodontic evaluation on all children by age 7. We also suggest taking a panoramic X-ray at this time to evaluate tooth and jaw development. By this point in your child’s growth, they will have a combination of primary and permanent teeth, allowing us to screen for potential bite alignment issues. Should any orthodontic needs be noted, we can implement early interceptive care before they evolve into bigger concerns.

Gap Free Children's Dental Care

We provide gap free checkups for kids (under 12) who have health fund cover. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule also supports families without health fund cover by covering eligible children with up to $1,000 in basic services every 2 years. This includes examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fissure sealants, fillings, extractions and root canals.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
